Amazon Launches Alexa+ Featuring Natural Language Interaction

Sep 1, 2025

Amazon unveils Alexa+, a generative AI-powered assistant with natural conversations, personalization, and Prime integration.

Amazon has unveiled its next-generation voice assistant, Alexa+, which offers groundbreaking capabilities for natural conversation. Announced on August 7, 2025, Alexa+ marks a departure from traditional voice interfaces by allowing users to interact without repeatedly saying the wake word "Alexa", enhancing the flow of conversations.

A Personalized AI Experience

Alexa+ introduces a suite of enhanced features powered by generative AI, enabling users to enjoy seamless conversational experiences. With its ability to maintain context throughout interactions, users can now control multiple devices, manage schedules, explore trending topics, and receive personalized recommendations - all in one fluid dialogue.

"Alexa+ operates through what Amazon describes as ‘experts’ – specialized systems that orchestrate across thousands of services and connected devices", the company stated. Built on Amazon Bedrock’s large language models, Alexa+ leverages advanced AI to autonomously navigate the internet and complete tasks.

Advanced Smart Home Integration

The assistant’s capabilities extend to smart home devices, with integrations across major brands such as Philips Hue and Roborock. Through partnerships with platforms like OpenTable, Vagaro, and Grubhub, users can manage reservations, food orders, and more. Alexa+ also supports music streaming through popular services like Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music, and iHeartRadio.

Amazon claims Alexa+ can orchestrate across tens of thousands of services simultaneously, setting a new benchmark for integration complexity. The system is equipped to execute commands such as initiating video streaming on Fire TV devices directly from an Echo device in another room.

Expanded Device Compatibility

Alexa+ is initially available to owners of Echo Show 8, 10, 15, and 21 devices during an Early Access phase, with broader compatibility rolling out in stages. Other supported devices include Fire TV models such as Fire TV Cube and Fire Max 11 tablets running Fire OS 8 or higher. However, certain older devices, such as first-generation Echo and Echo Dot models, are not compatible.

Amazon also introduced the Echo Show 21 in November 2024, offering a 21-inch display with advanced audio and room adaptation technology. This device supports up to eight widgets and new XXL widgets for enhanced screen customization, further enhancing its role as a household hub.

Enhanced Personalization Features

Alexa+ elevates personalization through Voice ID and Visual ID technologies. Voice ID enables the assistant to identify individual speakers and customize responses based on personal preferences. For example, users can request tailored music playlists or receive recommendations aligned with their past interactions. Visual ID, available on compatible Echo Show devices, recognizes users visually to deliver personalized dashboard content.

"Users can teach Alexa+ to remember family recipes, important dates, dietary preferences, and other contextual information", Amazon explained. This personalization allows the assistant to offer tailored suggestions, such as recommending recipes or restaurants that accommodate multiple dietary restrictions.

Cross-Device Functionality and Interactive Continuity

One standout feature of Alexa+ is its cross-device continuity. Conversations started on one device can seamlessly transition to other platforms, such as mobile apps, web browsers, or Fire TV. This ecosystem-wide integration ensures users can maintain the flow of discussions without losing context, offering convenience and flexibility.

Pricing and Availability

Alexa+ is positioned as a new benefit for Amazon Prime members, included at no additional cost. Non-Prime users can access Alexa+ through a monthly subscription priced at $19.99. A Free Early Access period allows customers to explore the service before subscription charges begin.

The rollout of Alexa+ began in February 2025, with expansion planned in waves. Currently, the service is available in the United States, and device language settings must be configured to "English United States" for compatibility.

Privacy and Security Commitments

Amazon highlights robust privacy protections for Alexa+, with all data centralized within the Alexa Privacy dashboard. The assistant operates on Amazon Web Services’ infrastructure, which the company describes as offering "world-class privacy and security protection." However, details on data storage and third-party sharing policies were not disclosed in the announcement.

Looking Ahead

With Alexa+, Amazon aims to redefine the smart assistant experience by combining cutting-edge conversational AI with deep personalization and seamless integration. This launch represents the company’s response to growing advancements in conversational AI while leveraging its established smart home ecosystem. Whether users are managing homes, exploring new interests, or seeking tailored recommendations, Alexa+ promises to deliver a highly intuitive and connected experience.
